How can I get rid of ground ivy and wild violets in my lawn?
Ground ivy (also known as creeping charlie) and wild violets are perennial creeping weeds that are difficult to control with most herbicides. To get rid of these weeds, apply herbicide during the spring when they’re flowering. The second-best time to apply a herbicide is in the fall. Mid-summer applications are not effective on these weeds.
Two herbicides effective for controlling ground ivy and violets are Quinclorac, which is only sold in turf specialty stores like LESCO (www.lesco.com), and Ortho Weed-B-Gon with the purple label for chickweed, clover and oxalis, which can be purchased at local lawn and garden stores. Although Weed-B-Gon isn’t as effective as Quinclorac, it’s better than other herbicides. Any other product containing triclopyr will also work. Be sure to follow all manufacturer instructions when applying herbicides.
