How do I control turfgrass insects?
What options do I have to control turfgrass insects and have a low impact on the environment?
1) Live and let live. Turfgrass insects are often present in the soil and go unnoticed as long as they get their food (normally turf roots) and the grass still gets the resources to live. If they (and their effects) are out of sight, consider them out of mind.
2) While those bugs eat your lawn, they might not like to find other bugs that want to eat them! So, see if there are any biological controls available for your area. These include insects or organisms that prey on the unwanted insects. Be advised, however, that biological controls are likely to be expensive.
3) Be part of the solution! Check your own routine, and make sure you are not helping the problem with poor lawn-care. One good example is excess thatch, which creates a great haven for turfgrass insects. Control the thatch, and watch the insect problem decrease naturally. Remember, a healthy plant is still your best defense!
